The Western Digital My Passport Ultra is a portable drive that you can slip into your shirt pocket. Best of all, it features 256-bit hardware encryption and integrated local and cloud backup solutions that allow you to make use of your Dropbox account to create a an additional backup. It is one of the better devices available today for making backups and for carrying your information with you. From a privacy viewpoint, the Western Digital My Passport Ultra is a great portable hard drive that has the capability to encrypt everything on the drive to keep it safe from prying eyes in case it is lost or stolen.
Another great feature is speed. The Western Digital My Passport Ultra features a USB 3.0 connection. If plugged into a computer that also supports USB 3.0, the read/write speeds of data transfers will be much faster than with the more common USB 2.0 hard drives. Like all USB 3.0 devices, however, it is backwards compatible with the older version of USB. You can plug this hard drive into any computer’s USB port and it will work well. It simply works faster with a USB 3.0-equipped computer than it does with older systems. The drive is powered directly from the USB port on your computer. No separate power supply is needed.
The My Passport Ultra is preformatted for Windows (NTFS), but it can be easily reformatted for use with a Macintosh (HFS+). The drive comes with 256-bit hardware encryption, the WD SmartWare backup program that allows you to make use of your Dropbox account for create a separate backup, as well as WD Drive Utilities and WD Security.
Most of the included utilities are available for both Windows and Macintosh. One exception is the WD SmartWare backup program that is only for Windows. That limitation is not a big deal, however as any Macintosh user can simply use Time Machine with the drive. Time Machine is undoubtedly a better backup program anyway.
The Western Digital My Passport Ultra is available in one terabyte and two terabyte versions. Not bad for a portable drive that you can slip into your pocket! Prices run about $70 for the one terabyte version and $110 for the two terabyte version. It is also available in a variety of colors.
I purchased the two terabyte version and am happy with its operation when plugged into the USB 3.0 port on my Mac. It is small, quiet, and I can easily take it with me when traveling.
You can find the Western Digital My Passport Ultra in most computer stores. I purchased mine from Amazon at http://goo.gl/qj87MK. I also purchased the matching Western Digital My Passport Carrying Case at http://goo.gl/NfjUKq for an additional $4.99, a modest price for anyone like myself who travels frequently.
