The National Security Letter (NSL) is a surveillance tool that allows the US government to demand a huge amounts of private information about anyone. Issuance of the demand letter does not require a warrant or a judge’s signature. It allows Federal agencies to demand almost any information about anyone. Federal investigators issue tens of thousands of them each year to banks, ISPs, car dealers, insurance companies, doctors, and you name it. The letters include a gag order to the recipient, forbidding the disclosure of the NSL to the public or the target.
