I have written about VPNs. I use VPNs daily to keep my IP address and location secret from snoops. It also offers encryption of all data sent and received so that nobody can tap into my Internet connection and read what I am sending and receiving. I especially appreciate the encryption when connecting to a financial web site, such as that of my bank, when using a shared wi-fi connection at a coffee shop or in a hotel.
Now ghacks.net has published a primer on the five major reasons you might want to use a VPN. The reasons include: Privacy; Security; Geo-restrictions; ; and P2P / File Downloads. You can find the article at http://www.ghacks.net/2016/01/06/top-5-reasons-to-use-a-vpn/.
