Republic Wireless Now Allows You to Bring Your Own Phone

republic_wireless_logoI have written before (at about the advantages of low-cost cell phone service from Republic Wireless and other companies. The drawback of Republic Wireless has been that you had to buy the phones from them. Now, however, you can purchase a SIM card and bring your own phone. Monthly cellular service starts at $15 a month. A list of all available pricing plans may be found at

Of course, there is one major catch: Only certain phones can be used. Since Republic Wireless’s model relies on a complex method of swapping between Wi-Fi and cell networks rapidly, only certain phones can be used on their network. Previously, Republic required that you buy those phones directly from the company so they could load the software on first. Now, you can buy those phones from any retailer you want and install the required software once you get your Republic SIM.

However, you still only have a limited list of phones that you can bring yourself. Here’s the entire list of supported phones you can bring to Republic right now:

  • Moto G4
  • Moto G4 Plus
  • Moto X Pure Edition
  • Nexus 5X by LG
  • Nexus 6P by Huawei
  • Samsung Galaxy J3
  • Samsung Galaxy S6
  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
