Linux has long had a good reputation for maintaining privacy of the individual. Amongst all the versions of Linux (called “distributions” or “distros”), The Amnesic Incognito Live System (TAILS) has the reputation of being the MOST PRIVATE. TAILS can be installed on almost any computer designed to run Windows or Macintosh. Yes, unlike some other Linux operating systems, TAILS has versions available for a Macintosh computers as well as for Windows systems.
Best of all, TAILS is available FREE of charge.
TAILS runs from a removable flash drive. It is not necessary to format the computer’s hard drive or to “blow away” the Windows or Macintosh operating system. You can literally have your cake and eat it too. In this case, you can use one computer for running both TAILS and also for running either Windows or macOS. The different operating systems will never interfere with each other.
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (TAILS) version 3.12 is now available.
To run the new version 3.12, all that you need is a working Windows or Macintosh computer and a single 8 gigabyte USB flash drive. A larger storage capacity flash drive might be useful if you want to store lot of data but most people will be happy with 8 gigabytes. Of course, using a USB 3.0 flash drive plugged into a USB 3.0-capable USB port on the computer will make things run faster but even that is not necessary. Many people run TAILS on older Windows PCs that were manufactured long before the availability of USB 3.0.
NOTE: TAILS also can be run from a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM disk or from a disk image file for use on virtual computers that may not have USB connectors or even physical CD-ROM drives.
Installation on the flash drive should take about an hour and a half. Again, once installed, the USB flash drive can be removed, the computer is then rebooted, and Windows or macOS returns to operation as usual.
I keep a TAILS flash drive handy at all times but use it mostly for accessing my online bank account, stock broker account, and other financial web sites. Most Linux experts consider TAILS to be the most secure and most hacker-resistant computer operating system available.
In comparison to earlier versions, TAILS 3.12 updates Linux to version 4.19, gaining Intel and AMD microcode fixes as well as support for a plethora of new hardware. The Tor Browser is also upped to version 8.0.5 and Thunderbird is bumped to 60.4.0.
