A U.S. Senator Demands MORE Encryption, Not Less

Senator Ron Wyden

This is a unique twist in the ongoing saga of using encryption to protect your secrets. In recent weeks, several U.S. Senators have demanded. that all online communications either not be encrypted at all or else be encrypted with a “back door” that allows government employees (and undoubtedly others) to have the ability to read these communications. (See https://bit.ly/2ClmhWf for a list of my past articles concerning this privacy invasion.)

Now Senator Ron Wyden is demanding to know why Twitter doesn’t have MORE encryption!

“In September of 2018, shortly before he testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee, I met privately with Twitter’s CEO Jack Dorsey. During that conversation, Mr. Dorsey told me the company was working on end-to-end encrypted direct messages. It has been nearly two years since our meeting, and Twitter DMs are still not encrypted, leaving them vulnerable to employees who abuse their internal access to the company’s systems, and hackers who gain unauthorized access,” Wyden said in a statement.

Here is a message to all elected officials: “Make up your minds. You can’t have it both ways!”

You can read more about Senator Wyden’s remarks in an article by Joseph Cox in the Vice.com web site at https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/jgxdwy/twitter-encrypted-direct-messages-dms-ron-wyden
